What Does a Standard Carrier HVAC Installation Actually Cover?

When you're staring at a Carrier system invoice, “standard installation” sounds straightforward. But after coordinating dozens of installs (and a few that went sideways), I've learned the term covers a lot of ground. Below are the common questions I get—answered based on what I've actually seen on the job.

1. What's included in a standard Carrier system package?

A typical Carrier residential split system package (condenser + air handler or furnace) includes the outdoor unit, indoor unit, and a basic thermostat. What it doesn't include, and this trips people up: line sets, refrigerant, drain pans, or any ductwork modifications. I've had facility managers assume the truck shows up with everything needed for hookup. It doesn't. In March 2024, we had a job stalled for 48 hours because the contractor didn't realize the 3-ton unit didn't come with pre-charged lines beyond 15 feet. That cost us a weekend of overtime.

2. How long does a standard installation take?

For a straightforward replacement of a same-size unit on an existing pad with existing ductwork and electrical: a good crew can do it in 4 to 6 hours. But “straightforward” is rare. In my experience, about a third of installations hit a snag—wrong adaptor kit, a refrigerant line that's too short, or a pad that's cracked. The job that changed how I think about airflow happened in October 2023. We pulled a 10-year-old Carrier unit and replaced it with an Infinity 24. The ductwork looked fine, but static pressure was off by 0.3 inches. Took another day to fix. Standard installation time is almost never standard; budget a full day minimum.

3. Do I need to replace the thermostat?

Not always, but you probably should. Carrier's Infinity systems use a communicating thermostat that's specific to the system. If you're upgrading to an Infinity model, you'll need their thermostat or a compatible communicating stat—standard 24-volt thermostats won't get you the variable-speed benefits. I can only speak to new installations here, but simple swap-outs with basic 13 SEER units often reuse the existing thermostat. It works, but you're leaving efficiency on the table. If the new unit is variable-speed, spend the extra $200-400 on the communicating stat. It'll pay back in comfort alone.

4. What about ductwork—does it need modification?

Honestly, I'm not sure why this question doesn't come up more often before the installers arrive. The answer: often, yes. If you're replacing a 3-ton system with a properly sized 3-ton system on the same ductwork, it might be fine. But if you're going from a 3-ton to a 4-ton, or from an older unit to a high-efficiency model with different airflow characteristics, ductwork modification is likely. Roughly speaking, I'd expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $2,500 for duct modifications, depending on access and layout. The vendor who said “your ductwork looks original—we should check static pressure before quoting” earned my trust for everything else. That honesty saved us a callback.

5. Is a permit required?

Yes, in most jurisdictions. This isn't a gray area—it's code. Per USPS and FCC? No, that's the wrong acronym. I mean local building codes. Most municipalities require a mechanical permit for HVAC replacement. The cost is usually $75 to $300, and the permit ensures the work is inspected. I've seen flaky contractors skip this to save $150, and it almost always backfires. In 2022, a client of mine had to rip out a $12,000 system because it wasn't permitted and the inspector caught it during a home sale. The installer was gone. Don't skip the permit.

6. Is there a question you should ask that no one does?

Yes: “What's the specific model number, and can I see the submittal sheet?” I didn't fully understand the value of detailed spec sheets until a $3,000 order came back completely wrong. The contractor quoted a Carrier 24ACC636, but installed a 25HCE636—similar capacity, different compressor type. The submittal sheet would have caught it. Standard installation means you get what's listed on the contract, not what's “close enough.” So ask for the full model list upfront. It's the single best way to avoid surprises.

7. What's not included that surprises people most?

Concrete pad (if needed), electrical disconnect and wiring from the panel to the unit, refrigerant line insulation, and debris removal of the old unit. A contractor I worked with in January 2025 had to run a separate 30-amp circuit for a new heat pump because the old unit was on a 20-amp circuit. That's not covered in “standard install.” The punch list I always review before sign-off: pad condition, electrical disconnect, line set length, and permit status. If any of those are missing, it's not a standard install.
