The real cost of a Carrier system isn't in the equipment price tag.
If you're a commercial contractor or facility manager comparing quotes for a Carrier heat pump or air conditioner, and your main focus is the unit price—you're almost certainly going to overpay. Not by a little. By thousands.
I learned this the hard way. In my first year (2017) handling HVAC procurement for a mid-sized commercial property group, I confidently chose the lowest-priced Carrier quote for a 10-ton rooftop unit. The unit itself? Fine. But the total cost of getting it installed, commissioned, and actually working reliably? That's where the real number lives. And I missed it completely.

What Most People Get Wrong
It's tempting to think you can compare equipment prices like you're buying a commodity. 'This Carrier Infinity is $X, that one is $Y. Go with the lower number.' But the simplicity of that logic ignores the real complexity of an HVAC project.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the equipment price is the part they know you'll shop around for. The rest—the thermostat, the sensors, the programming, the warranty handling, the freight coordination—that's where margin gets hidden, and where your cost can balloon.
I've been guilty of this myself. After the third time I got burned by a 'low price' that turned out to be a partial quote, I realized the problem wasn't the vendor. It was how I was evaluating quotes. I was looking at the wrong number.
The Simple Rule That Changed Everything
Here's what I do now, and what I add to every HVAC procurement checklist for our team:
Ask 'what's not included' before asking 'what's the price.'
More specifically, before comparing quotes for a Carrier system, get the following in writing from every vendor:
- Thermostat model and compatibility — Is it the exact model required for infinite variable-speed systems? (The Infinity thermostat isn't the only option, but using the wrong one can kill efficiency.)
- Warranty registration details — Who registers it? When? Ask for a confirmation number.
- Controls and programming scope — Is setup included? Or is it a separate quote?
- Freight and delivery specifics — Does the price include delivery to your site? What about inside delivery? Freight is often separate.
- Completion and acceptance timeline — When will the system be fully commissioned? Ask for a specific date, not a range.
If any vendor hesitates on these, consider it a red flag. The vendors who list everything upfront—even if their total looks higher—are usually the ones who cost less in the end.
Don't hold me to this, but our team has caught at least 7 major cost overruns using this checklist in the past 18 months. The total savings across those projects? Roughly $45,000, conservatively.
When This Rule Doesn't Apply
This approach works best for larger commercial projects (rooftop units, multiple zones, complex controls). For small residential replacements or standard split systems where controls are simple, the unit price might be 80-90% of the total. In those cases, comparing equipment pricing directly makes more sense.
Also, if you have a long-standing relationship with a vendor who always delivers reliably, the extra checks are less critical. Trust matters. I've learned that the hard way too.
