Side B is the quick comfort pile. That could be a space heater from Five Below. It could be a mini fridge that somebody assumes will help keep a room cool because it makes things cold. It could be a random collection of plug-in devices that grows over time.
The comparison isn't about brand loyalty. It's about whether a collection of small appliances can do the job of a central HVAC system. I've seen enough emergency calls to have a strong opinion: in most commercial buildings, the answer is no.
Dimension 1: Cooling Capacity—There's No Substitute for BTU
A 4 ton Carrier AC unit moves 48,000 BTU per hour. That's not a marketing number; it's the rated capacity. It removes heat from the building and dumps it outside. It can do that continuously, hour after hour, without turning a break room into a sauna.
Now think about the other side.
A Five Below space heater is a heating device. It does not cool. It's the opposite of cooling. If you run it while you're also trying to cool a space, it's working against you. A mini fridge isn't designed to cool the room either. It extracts heat from its interior and pushes that heat out through the condenser coils. In a small break room, a Paris Hilton mini fridge might keep drinks cold, but it adds heat to the air around it. The more you run it, the harder an AC unit has to work.
Here's the conclusion from this dimension: if you need to cool a commercial space, no number of small appliances can match the BTU math of one 4 ton Carrier AC unit. A mini fridge doesn't cool a room—it warms it. That's a fact people don't expect.

On the heating side, the argument gets a little closer, because space heaters really do produce heat. A typical electric space heater puts out somewhere around 5,000 BTU/hr. That's enough to take the edge off a small office if you're sitting near it.
But a building's heating load is usually much larger. In a commercial space, the design load might be 80,000 or 100,000 BTU/hr. You would need sixteen or twenty space heaters running simultaneously to match that. That's not a heating system. That's a fire waiting to happen.
Carrier central air conditioners are often paired with a furnace or a heat pump for heating. A central system is sized using a Manual J load calculation, which is the ACCA's industry standard for matching equipment to the actual heat loss and heat gain of the building. If a Manual J calculation says the cooling load is only 1.5 tons, installing 4 tons would cause short cycling, poor humidity control, and higher operating costs. Right-sizing is exactly where a contractor earns their fee. A specialist who knows limits will tell you when you need a smaller system or even a ductless mini-split instead.
The opposite is also true: if the load is 4 tons, don't throw space heaters and mini fridges at it. You're not saving money. You're just spreading the risk around.
Honest Scope: When to Call Someone Else
One more thing that came up during a recent triage conversation: the pilot light on a gas water heater.
I'm an HVAC specialist, not a plumber. But a customer once asked me how to light a pilot light on a gas water heater because the water heater was in the same mechanical room as the Carrier furnace. I walked him through the standard lighting sequence: turn the gas valve to pilot, press and hold the knob, light the pilot, hold it for a full minute, then turn it to on. But the more important lesson is to choose based on honest load, honest budget, and honest scope. A good HVAC professional should be able to tell you when a smaller system is better, when a temporary rental is smarter, and when you need to call someone else entirely. That's not weakness. That's how trust gets built.
